Boating is a popular way to spend quality time on the river. Some prefer taking their boat upriver for a leisurely float downriver, allowing the current to do all the work. Take in the views of the bluffs and countryside going by, and even see wildlife and all the beauty nature has to offer. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular with river enthusiasts, offering a peaceful way to explore hidden coves and feel truly connected to nature. There is something so calming about being on the river at certain times of the day, while at other times, it turns into an exciting adventure with friends.

Get Ready to Reel In the Good Times

To make the most of your time on the water, consider getting an early start fishing by camping the night before. Herman’s Riverfront Park Primitive Camping area lets you pitch a tent on the riverbank. It has accessible restrooms, one small pavilion, and one barbecue pit nearby. No reservations required. It’s ADA compliant and child-friendly, and pets are welcome. Prefer a few more amenities? Set up camp (RV or tent) at Hermann City Park.  Or venture out about 30 minutes north of Hermann to Graham Cave State Park, to their campground or their boat ramp to access the Loutre River for more boating and fishing outings. Whiskers, the local bait shop located right by the river, can help you gear up for your time on the water.

But of course, river fun comes with responsibility. Remember your boating safety and river etiquette – always wear your lifejackets, respect any no-wake zones, be courteous, and share the river with fellow river enthusiasts.

Catch of the Day

For some, it’s the joy of escaping their daily routine—connecting with nature, breathing in the river air, and finding a little peace on the water. Others are in it strictly for the thrill of the catch—flexing their fishing skills, and relishing the challenge of choosing the right bait, time of day, and location to create the ideal conditions for a great catch. Others like the unpredictability of what the day may bring. Both can offer a great deal of excitement and fulfillment. There’s nothing like reeling in a whopper—especially if it ends up on your dinner plate!

The Missouri River is home to Catfish, Crappie, Carp, Bluegill, and Largemouth Bass, and offers opportunities for anglers of all skill levels.
