Maifest in Hermann: A Celebration of Spring & German Heritage

As the scent of blossoming May flowers fills the air, Hermann’s streets and historic buildings resemble a quaint Bavarian village. You won’t want to miss the Maifest celebration in historic Hermann May 17-19.

Rooted in tradition and German heritage, Maifest is a celebration that marks the arrival of spring and the end of the school year. With its mix of music, dancing, culinary delights, and cultural activities, Maifest offers an unforgettable experience for locals and visitors with its blend of old-world charm and lively festivities. Whether savoring traditional German fare at restaurants or at the market, exploring the town’s historic sites, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Maifest will leave you with cherished memories.

Maifest has a long history in Hermann. When German immigrants settled in Hermann in 1837, they continued this time-treasured event. After the World Wars, the celebration fell out of favor, and for decades, Maifest wasn’t celebrated in Hermann. In 1952, the Brush & Palette Club revitalized the celebration as a fundraiser to restore older buildings in town. It was such a success that it again became an annual tradition.

This year’s event has many of the hallmarks of Maifest as it is celebrated in Germany: German music, German dancing, a Volksplatz (German Market), and so much more for all to enjoy. For more information, visit maifesthermann.org and check out our 2024 Maifest Schedule.

The Maifest Market

Saturday, May 18, from 9 AM to 7 PM.

Located on Schiller and Third Streets, the Maifest Market will showcase various artists, local makers, craftspeople, and live music. The Maifest Market is one day only, so be sure to check it out!

German cuisine is a highlight of the celebrations. Visitors can indulge in an array of traditional German dishes such as bratwurst, schnitzel, pretzels, and sauerkraut, sample German beers and wines, and more.

The Maifest Parade

Sunday, May 19th at 2:00pm
