Wurst & Kraut Class

When: Friday, March 22, 2019, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Where: Hermann Wurst Haus

Cost: $89 per person

Make a hands-on sausage and sauerkraut-making class part of your Wurstfest weekend.

Wurst Haus owner Mike Sloan will show you the ropes of sausage-making. Dan Kuebler and Joey Los will lead a hands-on workshop on making naturally fermented kraut the same was as Hermann settlers.

About the Instructors

  • Mike Sloan started work in the meat industry at his parents’ processing plant in Swiss, Missouri. He and his wife Lynette opened the Hermann Wurst Haus in 2011. Over the course of his career, he has won more than 400 national, state and regional awards, including 14 best-of-show honors. Mike has been president of the American Association of Meat Processors (AAMP), Missouri Association of Meat Processors (MAMP) and chaired the Hermann Wurstfest. He was inducted into the Hermann Wurstfest Hall of Fame in 1997 and into the MAMP Hall of Fame in 2012.
  • Dan Kuebler learned about live culture products from his upbringing in Hermann, where his great, great grandfather was one of the founding fathers. Today Farmer Dan uses the same traditional methods to preserve fresh vegetables by small-batch fermenting. He is a leader in the local food movement in Columbia, Missouri, and a long-time vendor at the Columbia Farmers Market.
  • Joey Los, who grew up in a German family in St. Louis, has lived in the Hermann area for 20 years. A self-employed artist and culinary adventurer, she is the innkeeper at Joey’s Birdhouse B&B on the Katy Trail in McKittrick. In addition, she tends a large permaculture garden and teaches classes in foraging, fermentation and more.

Class fee includes a wurst meal, wurst, wine and beer tasting, a free drink ticket and products you create in class to take home. In addition, the sausage you make will be entered for judging in the Wurstfest amateur competition.
