Museum
Placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1982, the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows attracts visitors of all denominations year round as well as for special pilgrimages. Its history dates to 1847 when the first people came to the area known as Rhineland or Loutre Island, along the Missouri River.  The area was soon to be named "Starkenburg" when a name was needed for a post office. St. Martin’s Church Museum, Valentine Hall, several grottoes, and outdoor Stations of the Cross are also located on the forty-acre property.
