Gear up for fall with an excellent outdoor activity—The Katy Trail

Biking, hiking, strolling, or even horseback riding—whatever you’re in the mood for, do it on the Katy Trail, the nation’s longest rails-to-trails project. The trail is built on the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad corridor, bringing history back to life for locals and visitors to enjoy. It’s perfect for your morning jog, evening stroll, or leisurely bike ride!

The 240-mile trail spreads among Missouri’s countryside with the Hermann area access just 2 miles north of the Hermann Bridge. There is a parking lot at the trail entry point for those starting their journey locally. Heading into Hermann once you’re on the trail? No worries! The Hermann Bridge offers a protected bike lane for a quick and easy connection from the trail to town. Once you’ve crossed, the trail will dip down under Highway 19 and emerge on the shoulder for a safe transition.

This trail offers so many beautiful, picturesque spots to help you unwind, soak up nature, and discover parts of Missouri’s history. Whichever way you choose to go, you’ll find something interesting, like part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail or the American Discovery Trail. If you want to stick close to the Hermann area, bike up to Bluffton and hike the Grand Bluffs where amazing views are waiting. On the way back, bike 2 miles up Highway P to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows and take in all the beauty the church and 40 acres has to offer.

Aside from the fascinating history of the trail, there’s plenty of nature to see. Bring your camera and snap some breathtaking photos of the scenic areas along the Missouri River and the small towns nestled among it—some still thriving today and others reflecting the rich history of the state’s past.

Luckily, the trail is open year-round, dawn to dusk, making it a perfect activity for the approaching fall season. Enjoy a stroll and take in the beautiful fall colors or ride your bike while basking in the cool fall air. If you’re searching for an outdoor activity, the Katy Trail is a great option!
